What is Pelvic Floor?

The “pelvic floor” is a group of muscles that provide support to the organs and control bowel and bladder function. Dysfunction, tension, or weakness of these muscles can result in a variety of problems including incontinence or pain.

Symptoms of dysfunction may include:

  • Loss of urine or stool with coughing, sneezing, running, jumping
  • Increased urge to urinate and/or increased frequency of urination
  • Pain with sexual activity / pelvic examinations
  • Feelings of the pelvic floor “falling out”
  • Bowel dysfunction (constipation, anal fissures, etc)

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Tailbone pain, rectal/anal pain

ThriveAgain Physical Therapy & Wellness treats a wide variety of pelvic health issues for all genders and ages. Our physical therapists specialize in treating both penile/testicular and vulvovaginal pain, as well as bladder and bowel problems. We also provide support during pregnancy and post-partum periods. Our practice strives to create a safe and welcoming environment for patients of all races, backgrounds, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities. We aim to be place of healing for survivors of trauma or abuse.

Our Comprehensive Pelvic Floor Evaluation

At ThriveAgain, our comprehensive evaluations last a full hour and 20 minutes. This gives us time to get a full history of what’s bothering you, complete a thorough evaluation, and begin treatment on the very first visit.

Our pelvic floor evaluations start with an assessment of your back and hips, as these frequently play a part in pelvic pain and incontinence. We then move on, when and if appropriate, to an external examination of your pelvic region, and an internal vaginal and/or rectal exam of the pelvic floor muscles. During the vaginal or rectal assessment, we assess strength, tension, trigger points, flexibility and coordination of the muscles.

We discuss everything that will happen ahead of time, and only move at the pace at which each individual patient is comfortable. Using a compassionate and trauma-informed approach, we are committed to making this process as comfortable as possible. We develop a treatment plan specifically for each individual, focused around your needs and goals. Treatment may include manual releases, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, strengthening exercises, stretching exercises, functional retraining and more.

Our integrated team includes a psychotherapist with expertise in this area who is available to processes any issues that may arise during the course of treatment.
